I’m a pretty decent desktop PC technician, but I haven’t done more than change memory and hard drives in laptops. I’ve got several dead laptops to take apart. Is that a start?

Yeah, a bit of practice certainly helps. Taking them apart and putting them back together is 90% of it. The other 10% is diagnostic skills.
