I brought this question to my dad, who was a IT manager. The main reason is uniformity. It's important that all the systems remain alike, it's much easier to manage and to pinpoint problems.

Price is not valid as Windows computers have a much higher cost of ownership.

You are not based in reality! EVERYTHING for Mac costs more.

Don't get me wrong - I have had an Apple, but when anything went wrong - which didn't happen often - was expensive to fix.

Unfortunatly, someone saw you coming! If you are use to the newer systems, you wont get that old piece of junk to run anywhere near the speed of a newer PC! I hope you didnt pay over 40 bucks for it! You can usually pick these up at garage sales for 50 cents!

Comment on Is Geek Squad better than the local computer repair guy? by Joe

Geek Squad offers in-home services and in store services. The price difference is usually $100 between the two. If everything is physically ok with your PC then in store it'll be $199 to FIX it.

For that flat fee, Geek Squad will try and repair ALL errors you may be getting, they will clean up ALL viruses you might have, they will do full hardware diagnostics on your system, they will download and install all missing updates for windows, delete all system clutter, disable unnecessary start up items and processes, clean up the registry, tweak the registry, and also do a physical cleaning on the computer.

People who say its overpriced don't really know how long it takes to do all that. If Geek Squad charged by the hour (which they don't), it would most certainly be well over that price.

As far as stealing stuff from your computer, it is highly unlikely, given the bad press by very very few agents. Best Buy has implemented polices and restrictions on the computers that we use for data backups that will not allow us to view any pictures or videos or transfer those pictures and videos to any unapproved device. Personal flash drives are also restricted and those approved for use are constantly checked. The PC used for data backups is literally locked down with a lock and key (so the Hard Drive can't be removed), and as I said before, with software/policy restrictions.

Keep in mind the $199 is to fix your PC only. That price does not cover any physical parts that may need to be replaced, and it does not cover they labor to install any physical parts. Nor does it cover backing up any of your information.

Hope I helped....I'm a Geek Squad agent...I Know :)

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

There are so many beautiful small cities and large English speaking towns in Canada. You have such a great choice. One city that would probably suite your needs would be Kitchener,ON because they have a great university there that teaches computer technology.

A. They don't know anything about Macs.
B. Job security. They will have very few Macs coming across their desk.

Carnaby: Good post, but Macs have been coming with multifunction/multi-button mice for over a year now.
